IEEE is divided into ten geographic regions worldwide. Within those regions are more than 330 local sections and over 1,700 technical chapters that unite local members with similar technical interests. All Region and Section operating units are strongly encouraged to contribute to their operating unit's history page.

The Membership and Geographical Activities Committee (MGA) oversees and encourages membership in the Society and maintains records of Society membership. This includes students, GOLD members, Senior and Life Members and Fellows associated with the global microwave community. The MGA is responsible for promotion of the Society's interests through the formation of new Society Chapters, including Student Branch Chapters, maintaining supporting liaison through its regional coordinators with existing Society Chapters and promulgating activities that encourage membership in the Society. Related activities include organization of regular Chapter Chair meetings to encourage information exchange and discussion of Chapter activities. The MGA regularly disseminates publicity and information of interest about the IEEE and the Society to the Chapters, Sections, and to the Society membership at large.

• Chapters - Technical subunits of a region, one or more sections, or a geographic council.
• Councils - Technical Councils are groups of societies working together in broad areas of technology. Councils sponsor activities which benefit individuals in all of the member societies.
• IEEE-USA - IEEE-USA is an organizational unit of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. created in 1973 to support the career and public policy interests of IEEE's U.S. members. IEEE-USA is primarily supported by an annual assessment paid by U.S. IEEE members.
• Regions - The world is divided into ten IEEE Regions. The Region territories are not necessarily confined to a state or country boundaries. When such boundaries are crossed, the state or country is listed under the Region that contains most of its area.
• Sections - The ten IEEE regions are divided into geographic units called sections. A chapter is the technical sub-unit of one or more sections. Members of IEEE automatically become members of their local IEEE sections, allowing them to participate in workshops, seminars, networking programs, and other programs at the local level.
• Student branches - Student branches provide an opportunity for student members to begin networking in their areas of interest, and future profession. There are nearly 2,000 student branches in 80 countries, at various educational institutions.
• Subsections - Subsections are smaller branches of local sections which are not yet large enough to become a proper section.
