The section of West Central Mexico covers the states of Michoacán, Colima, and part of Jalisco. It set out in January 1994 at the initiative of renowned personalities of our educational and professional field, as Eng. Jose de Jesus Moreno Ruiz, Dr. Hector Ruiz Francisco Paredes, engineers Sofia M. Mendoza Machain, Lino Coria, Francisco Hernandez Cortes and Isaiah Elizarraraz, as well as Dr. Rodolfo Gonzalez Garza among others, and with great auspices of Dr. Eduardo Arreola, who was President of the Region 9, Latin America, IEEE. The section of West Central Mexico has over 300 members at present: No. Students: 224 No. Members: 42 No. Senior Member of: 1 No. Life Member: 1 Associates: 89 Since its founding, the Section has been devoted to promoting activities that contribute to educational development and updating on technological developments around the world. Two examples of this are the First Biennial Meeting of the IEEE Power Fall in 1998, which attracted over 50 speakers from a nationally and internationally recognized level of excellence, and the conference given by Ken Foster in October 1998.
The Section is currently working at opening a Subsection of Colima, where there are already enough members and great interest in it.
The Section includes the Student Branch of the Technological Institute of Morelia, which comprises more than 200 students belonging to the areas of Electrical and Computer. Its current President is Ricardo Reyes, a student of electrical engineering. The Section is also currently working to form the Student Branch of the University Michoacán de San Nicolas de Hidalgo and the University of Colima, who already have the number of students required to establish it.
