James D. Wallace was born in 1904 in Gloster, MS and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Mississippi. In 1926 he was appointed a junior physicist at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratories in Washington, D.C., where he spent his entire professional career until his retirement in 1970.
