Archives:The Computer Pioneers: Garry J. Tee Discusses Charles Babbage

The Computer Pioneers was a documentary produced by Richard Solomon in association with MIT in the early 1980s about the history of computers and computer technology.  Unfortunately, the documentary was never finished.  This segment of the unfinished product consists of Garry J. Tee, a former professor of mathematics at Auckland University who taught classes on the history of computers, discussing Charles Babbage and several of Babbage's ideas and inventions.

Charles Babbage lived from 1791-1871.  He was an English mathemetician, philosopher, inventor and mechanical engineer who first originated the concept of a programmable computer.  Babbage is considered one of the fathers of computing and was the inventor of the first mechanical computer.  Many of his unfinished inventions have only recently been completed and are capable of the things he imagined, including the difference engine and a printer designed to work with it.  Babbage is considered one of the fathers of computing and was the inventor of the first mechanical computer.
