Biography
Jay Taylor Last was born on October 18th, 1929, in Butler, PA, USA. At the age of 16, he hitchhiked across the country to San Jose, CA, and enrolled in the University of Rochester. Last earned his Ph.D. from M.I.T. in 1956, and was employed by William Shockley, but like many Shockley employees, Last was turned off by Shockley's abrasive management style. Along with seven colleagues known as "the traitorous eight", Last left Shockley to form Fairchild, and later co-founded Amelco. Last retired in 1974 and pursued his interests in art collecting, writing and mountain climbing. Last died on November 11th, 2021.
