Biography
Charles Donald Bateman was born on March 8th, 1932 in Saskatoon, SK, and graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1956. He joined Boeing in 1958, and United Control, which was later acquired by Honeywell, in 1960. In 1974 was awarded a patent for a fifteen second ground proximity warning system. This system was mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration in response to a TWA flight that crashed in Virginia, killing 92 people. Throughout his entire career at Honeywell when he retired in 2016, he improved the system, drastically reducing flight crashes into land or water.
In 2005, Bateman was inducted in the National Inventors Hall of Fame, and received the National Medal of Techhnology and Innovation in 2011. Bateman was the recipient of the 2013 Elmer A. Sperry Award for Enhancing the Art of Transportation.
Bateman died on May 21st, 2023.
