Biography
Pier L. Bargellini was born on February 7th, 1914 in Florence, Italy. At an early age, Bargellini developed an interest in amateur radio, however in Italy amateur radio had been suspended in 1927 by the government. Bargellini went on the air illegally in 1934 with the call sign I1KS. After the end of World War II he was issued one of the first 50 Italian licenses. In 1948 he was elected President of the Italian Radio Amateur Society and continued to operate in Italy until September 1950, at which time he immigrated to the United States.
From 1950 to 1968 Dr. Bargellini taught Electromagnetic Theory, Circuit Theory, and Modulation and Information Theory at the Moore School of Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania where he also did research on electronic noise in travelling wave tubes and transistors. From 1968 to 1984, he was a Senior Scientist and Assistant to the Director at COMSAT Labs, which developed and monitored communications systems (INTELSAT, INMARSAT, COMSTAR, etc.).
Bargellini won the Columbus Prize Award in 1975 and the Columbus Gold Medal in 1987. He has written over 65 papers and contributed to U.S. and European books and journals. Since 1984 he has been a consultant to various U.S. and European companies. Bargellini is a Life Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of the Institute of International Education, and an Associate of the AIM.
