Biography
John J. Mooney was on April 6, 1930, in Paterson, NJ. After high school, he worked for PSE&G, was accepted to Seton Hall University, where he received a bachelors degree in chemistry. After Seton Hall, he served in the Army, and received masters degrees in chemistry from Newark College of Engineering, and in marketing from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
In 1960, Mooney was employed by Englehard, where he spent 43 years and earning 17 patents. Here, with Carl D. Keith, Antonio Eleazar and Phillip Messina, they developed a catalytic converter on a 1973 Volvo station wagon, which reduced emissions of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides.
In 2004, Mooney received the Science and Technology Medal from the Research & Development Council of New Jersey.
He passed away on June 16, 2020.
