Biography
Jack Jewell’s crucial innovative advances regarding vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) sparked worldwide industrial VCSEL development and set the standard for an indispensable optoelectronic component. Featuring an all-semiconductor design, VCSELs are a low-power laser source that is more efficient, less expensive to produce, and easier to test compared to edgeemitting lasers. Jewell was the first to assemble many existing VSCEL concepts within a single device and in a unique and desirable fashion. Jewell’s research and commercialization efforts have driven VCSEL’s pervasive use in applications including optical mice, Ethernet communications, supercomputers, and advanced facial and gesture recognition.
An IEEE Senior Member, Jewell is a consultant currently residing in Boulder, CO, USA.
