Gary R. Hoffman
Biography
Gary Hoffman has made significant contributions to IEEE standards, particularly in power system monitoring, control, and protection. Hoffman’s technical expertise allowed him to understand the need for standards and how to develop them effectively. His dedication earned him the position of Chair of the Standards Association Standards Board, where he was instrumental in expanding IEEE’s global reach and engagement. He was a major supporter of efforts to drive the globalization of IEEE standards and led the charge to provide greater training. From a technical perspective, Hoffman’s inventions include a groundbreaking current differential relay for monitoring AC transmission lines, enhancing operating speed and security. His technical work has had a major impact in both standardization and industry.
An IEEE Life Fellow, Hoffman is President, Advanced Power Technologies, Randolph, New Jersey, USA and is the 2024 recipient of the IEEE Charles Proteus Steinmetz Award for "leadership in and development of power systems standards to increase global adoption."
