Colin Cherry was born in St. Albans, England, on 23 June 1914. He received the B.Sc. degree, in 1936, from the University of London, and the M.Sc. and the D.Sc. degrees from London University, in 1940 and 1942, respectively.
During World War II, Cherry was the British Telecommunications Research Establishment doing research on radar and in this area was concerned mainly with flying trials. In 1949, he joined the faculty of the Electrical Engineering Department of the Imperial College of Science and Technology of London University. He was appointed a Professor at this University in 1958.
Cherry was a member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE), London.
