Originally published in Mining Engineering 1976, this article briefly overviews the lives and achievements of eleven great American mining engineers, geologists, and mineral processing engineers. The ‘Great Men in American Mining’ list was drawn from AIME and SME past award recipients and examines the shared qualities between the individuals that helped to assure their success. Drawing on the careers of Herbert Hoover, Daniel C. Jackling, Henry Krumb, James Douglas, Rossiter W. Raymond, Hal W. Hardinge, Steeley W. Mudd, Erskine Ramsey, Howard N. Eavenson, Robert A. Richards, and Arthur F. Taggart, the article also analyzes the future of the mining industry.
