Walter Kahn

Biography

Walter K. Kahn (LF'94) was born in Mannheim, Germany, and fled from the Nazis, arriving in the United States in 1938. He received the B.S.E.E.degree from Cooper Union, New York, in 1951, and the M.E.E.and D.E.E.degrees from Polytechnic University (formerly the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn) Brooklyn, NY, in 1954, and 1960, respectively. From 1951 to 1954, he was engaged in monopulse radar system development at Wheeler Laboratories, Great Neck, NY. Subsequently, he joined the Polytechnic University, where he was an Assistant to the Director of the Microwave Research Institute and Professor in electrophysics. From 1967 to 1968, on leave from the Polytechnic University, he was a Liaison Scientist at the London, U.K., branch of the U.S.Office of Naval Research. In 1969, he joined the faculty of the George Washington University (GWU), Washington, DC, as Professor of Engineering and Applied Science. At GWU, he was Department Chairman from 1970 to 1974, and the Director of the Institute for Information Science and Technology from 1981 to 1991, and is currently Professor with the Department or Electrical and Computer Engineering.He has published more than 90 papers in electromagnetics, microwave components, antennas, and optics.He served as Consultant to the Naval Research Laboratory, the Institute for Defense Analyses, and major industrial organizations.,Dr.Kahn has served in various posts within IEEE, including Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation, Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques, and member of the Editorial Board of the Proceedings of the IEEE.

Kahn died on 31 January 2020.
