Shrikanth Narayanan
Biography
Shrikanth Narayanan’s work has revolutionized the study of human language production and led to novel biologically inspired speech technologies. By innovating sensing, imaging using real-time MRI, and computational modeling, his work has transformed our understanding of human speech, including in children and in cancer and stroke patients. Narayanan’s research in computational behavioral sciences has made enduring contributions to AI by bringing emotional and behavioral intelligence to the forefront with wide-ranging impact including in mental health. His inventions in voice and language processing, notably for remote processing on mobile devices, have provided the foundation for many of the now ubiquitous voice-based services used by millions of people worldwide.
An IEEE Fellow, Narayanan is University Professor, Nikias Chair in Engineering, and Vice President, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, USA and the recipient of the 2025 IEEE James L. Flanagan Speech and Audio Processing Award for "contributions to speech communication science and technologies for inclusive human-centered engineering."
