About the Interviewee
John Spencer MacDonald (13 August 1936 - 26 December 2019) has had a distinguished career in the technology community in British Columbia. He was a co-founder of MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates, which has become the largest technology company in BC. At MDA he served as President and CEO for thirteen years and Chairman for a subsequent sixteen years. Following a short retirement, he felt compelled to return to complete his mission as Chairman and CEO of Day4 Energy Inc., a solar energy company of which he is also a co-founder.
John has served on numerous technology company Boards. He is an advisor to Canadian, U.S. and other governments internationally on science, technology, trade policy and industrial policy, currently serving on the Canadian Department of National Defense, Science Advisory Board and the Canadian Space Agency Advisory Council. He served as one of three Canadian members of the APEC Business Advisory Council from 1998 to 2003 and was the Canadian member of the APEC Eminent Persons Group from 1993 to 1995.
