It should be a big milestone.

I think TPC-1 is worthy of being an IEEE Milestone. Before TPC-1 short wave transmission technology was used for telecommunications between Japan and US and a small number of voice channels were available and they were not always stable. In that sense TPC-1 really opened up a way toward broadband telecommunications between Japan and US and it should be a big milestone.

I support the milestone. I would favor shortening or substituting the last sentence of the citation and in place emphasizing the historical / technological significance.

How about the following updated Citation?

The first transpacific undersea coaxial telephone cable linking Japan, Hawaii and the US Mainland was completed in 1964. It was a joint project among American Telephone and Telegraph, Hawaiian Telephone Company, and Kokusai Denshin Denwa. Service over this communication bridge was inaugurated on 19 June 1964 by President Lyndon B Johnson and Prime Minister Hayato Ikeda. TPC-1 improved communication between Asia and U.S.A./Europe, and contributed to submarine cable technologies. (69 words)

I noted "TPC-1" Proposal is now "Ready for Board of Directors Action". How about the Citation? Shall I replace the the wording at Proposal by the above updated Citation (as of 9 March) in this Discussion? Kuwazuru (Proposer)

Masakuni Kuwazuru (talkcontribs)

Sorry. I now find the Citation at Proposal has been updated based on Discussion. Thank you for the approval by the Historry Committee members. Kuwazuru (Proposer)

I like the proposal and the concept of having matching plaques at both ends. I have some suggestions for the citation:

The first transpacific undersea telephone cable linking Japan, Hawaii and the US Mainland was completed in 1964. It was a joint project among American Telephone and Telegraph, Hawaiian Telephone Company, and Kokusai Denshin Denwa. Service over the new cable was inaugurated on 19 June 1964 by President Lyndon B Johnson and Prime Minister Hayato Ikeda, as they exchanged a congratulatory telephone call on the completion of this communication bridge between Asia and America.

Dear Mr. Feisel, Thank you, and as the Proposer, I agree to your advice. However, your sentence has 73 words. Though I am not sure how strict the 70 words limit, I amend as below:

The first transpacific undersea telephone cable linking Japan, Hawaii and the US Mainland was completed in 1964. It was a joint project among American Telephone and Telegraph, Hawaiian Telephone Company, and Kokusai Denshin Denwa. Service over this cable was inaugurated on 19 June 1964 by President Lyndon B Johnson and Prime Minister Hayato Ikeda, by exchanging a congratulatory telephone call on this communication bridge between Asia and America.

Dear Mr. Kuwazaru,

I like your version very much.

Lyle Feisel

Tbickart (talkcontribs)

I fully concur with Lyle. This is worthy of being an IEEE Milestone.

Masakuni Kuwazuru (talkcontribs)

Thank you for your approval. Kuwazuru (Proposer)

It appears some of the location and sponsor information is missing?

Masakuni Kuwazuru (talkcontribs)

Dear Johnston-san, "File: TPC-1 IEEE OwnerLetters(1).pdf" contains the information of both KDDI and Hawaiian Telcom as the land owners. "File: TPC-1 IEEE SectionChairLetters.pdf" contains the information of both IEEE Tokyo Section and Hawaii Section. I will try to split these letters on GHN website. Kuwazuru (Proposer)

Masakuni Kuwazuru (talkcontribs)

This is Kuwazuru (Proposer). I have updated the Proposal; (1) Citation [based on the Dicussions], (2) Historical significance, Obstacles, Features [polishing English], (3) one additional Supporting document. PDFs of owner letter and section chair letter include both Japan and Hawaii.

Jbart64 (talkcontribs)

I fully support this milestone and I really like the idea of putting one at each end of the cable. The claims are valid based on my knowledge of this subject and the supporting citations. --Dave Bart
