Mary Jane Irwin
Biography
Mary Jane Irwin has had a profound impact in two distinct fields: electronic design automation (EDA) and computer architecture. Her seminal research at the intersection of these two fields led to many advances in computer arithmetic, power-aware architectures, and automated processor design. Her contributions have also been broadly adopted by industry. Many computer systems implement her inventions, and her research on power-aware systems has influenced the design of high-performance, power-efficient, resilient chip multiprocessors, and multiprocessor systems on a chip. She is a staunch advocate for women engineers and has been instrumental in the accomplishments of the WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) program and the Women in Engineering Program (WEP).
An IEEE Fellow, Irwin is an Emerita Evan Pugh University Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, USA and is the 2024 recipient of the IEEE Gustav Robert Kirchhoff Award for "contributions to electronic design automation and power-aware computer architecture."
