Biography
Leland D. Strom earned a B.S. from Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, in 1948 and an M.S. from Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas, USA, in 1952.
In 1948 Strom joined Hazeltine Electronics Corporation, Little Neck, N.Y., USA, and moved to Texas Instruments in Dallas in 1951. He remained there until 1961, except for educational leave from 1955-57 when he completed his doctoral studies at the University of Texas, Austin, in 1957 as the first recipient of the Texas Instruments fellowship in applied science. He became assistant chief engineer of the advanced studies branch of TI's Engineering Department and was later named first as manager of the research and development department and then chief engineer of the engineering department.
Before becoming an independent consultant in 1963, he served for two years as a systems analyst for the Institute for Defense Analysis in the Washington, D.C., area. He also participated in entrepreneurial ventures, co-founding Delex Systems Inc., a northern Virginia Research and Development firm in 1968.
There he served as chief executive for the next five years. He resumed his full time consulting career in 1973, interrupting it for two years to serve as a program manager for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
After his retirement in 1989, Strom divided his time between Bangor, Maine, USA, and Arlington, Va., USA.
Strom died on May 19th, 1997.
