The X-2-1 crash site, 27 September 1956. After escape capsule separation, the craft descended much like a falling leaf, and impact with the desert floor was relatively light. The plane slid about 100 feet and broke into three pieces. The nose capsule hit about five miles away, killing test pilot Milburn Apt. NACA photo
