Historical Overview
A prose historical narrative should follow the initial timeline. If no timeline is present, the historical narrative should appear first on the page. All historical overviews should be written in an encyclopedic writing style. This means the prose should be third person in nature, with no first-person references or second-person calls to action. Writing should be neutral and not contain superlatives or value judgments. Language should be formal and not use informal idioms, slang, etc. The historical overview section should explicitly and primarily be about the historical development of the IEEE OU, and histories of the technologies should be confined to solely mentioned when directly relevant to the OU's development. Historical narratives should be one continuous narrative and not a series of newsletter-like items or blog posts.
The historical narrative should be presented in chronological order, starting with any relevant precursor organizations and technologies and leading into the OU's founding, then proceeding chronologically until as close to the present as possible. The historical narrative should detail major events in the OU's history, and not give undue space to minor events or trivia. Major events include: leadership changes, new initiatives, new conferences and publications, significant involvement in standardization activities, expansion in scope or territory, successes or failures in key initiatives, opening of physical offices.
Relevant images can be placed in-line in the text, right justification is fine for most images, but in the case of a large quantity of images, a gallery format should be used. In the case of a quantity of images too large for gallery format, or large quantities of other AV material, a separate page should be created and linked. When they exist on the ETHW, biographical pages of people mentioned in the text should be linked, as should be mentions of other IEEE OUs. In the case where a person, technology or OU is mentioned multiple times, a link should be provided only upon the first mention to avoid overlinking.
