Discovery of electrically conducting organic polymers

In 1977, Hideki Shirakawa, Alan MacDiarmid, and Alan Heeger announced the discovery of electrically conducting organic polymers, this led to the development of flat panel displays using organic light-emitting diodes, solar panels, and optical amplifiers.
