Biography
Chen To Tai was known for his work with electromagnetics and antenna theory. He was born in 1915 in Luzhi Township in China. In 1937, Tai earned his bachelor's degree in physics from Tsing-Hua University. Tai relocated to the United States in 1943 in order to pursue graduate study at Harvard University. He received his master's in communication engineering in 1944, and a PhD in 1947. In 1949, Tai joined the Stanford Research Institute as a research physicist.
Tai held faculty positions at the Ohio State University as well as the Technical Institute of Aeronautics in Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil before finally coming to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1964. Here is where he spent the rest of his career as a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and member of the Radiation Laboratory. In 1986, he achieved the title of Professor Emeritus. Tai received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the 1998 IEEE Heinrich Hertz Medal. He died on July 30, 2004 in Ann Arbor.
