Biography

Björn E. Ottersten is the inventor of Spatial Division Multiple Access (SDMA) for wireless communications. This technology, which represents a significant paradigm shift in wireless communications, has found numerous applications and was among the factors that led to the MIMO revolution in communications. This patented technology was successfully commercialized by ArrayComm Inc., where Ottersten served as Director of Research, and was deployed in PHS (Personal Handy-phone System). Today, spatial multiplexing is incorporated in all major wireless standards, including IEEE 802.20, 3GPP LTE, and IEEE 802.11ac/ax. More recently, Ottersten and his team have developed the theoretical foundation for symbol-level precoding, a new constructive interference exploitation paradigm in multi-antenna signal processing conceived for wireless networks.

An IEEE Fellow, Ottersten is a professor, Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT), University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg and is the 2025 recipient of the IEEE Fourier Award for Signal Processing for "contributions to array processing and its applications in wireless communications."
