IEEE HISTORY CENTER PRESS SUBMISSION GUIDELINES AND AUTHOR CHECKLIST

The IEEE History Center Press is interested in working with authors to publish books on the history of electrical and computing-related technologies. The IHC Press works with Amazon.com to publish handsome print-on-demand trade paperback and Kindle® versions. The IHC Press works with a professional indexer with experience in indexing scientific and technological books to prepare an index for your work. “History” in this case is thirty years old or more. The IEEE History Center Press does not publish books on current topics in electrical engineering and computing.

The History Center seeks publishable manuscripts on all aspects of the history of electrical, electronic, and computing technologies, especially

Biographies and autobiographies of electrical and computing pioneers.
Technological systems and device histories.
Corporate histories of electrical and computing corporations.
The historical effects of technologies on society.
The changing interface between a technology and people.
Histories of technology in emerging economies and developing countries.

Manuscripts should be written to appeal not only to the electrical engineer or computing practitioner, but also to the educated layperson and persons interested in the history of a particular place or era, or the intersection of technology with business or social history.

If you would like your work to be considered for publication by the IEEE History Center, please send the complete manuscript (including image placements within the text, see format below) to ieee-history@ieee.org for consideration. Do not send partial manuscripts or chapters, as we cannot form a complete opinion unless we can read the entire manuscript, and we will not be able to give preliminary evaluations based on a chapter or two.

It is often helpful, prior to sending, or even writing a manuscript, to complete a Book Proposal and Reason to Publish, (see section 5) including:

A two- or three-paragraph description of target audience.
Expected number of sales.
List of similar books in the field, and a two or three paragraph explanation of why your manuscript is different, and the ways it meets an unfilled need.
Your other publications.

If you wish, you may email the book proposal to IEEE History Center staff at ieee-history@ieee.org for staff to consult with you about your project on an informative, non-binding basis.

FORMATTING INSTRUCTIONS

Format: Times Roman, 12-pt, left-justified, no spacing. Five-space indents. Page breaks between chapters. Chapter headings in Times Roman 22-pt bold, left justified in one of the following formats:

Chapter 2: Title of Chapter 2

or

IV--Title of Chapter IV

or

Chapter IV: Title of Chapter IV

If you wish to put a quote under the chapter heading, the quote goes in italics.

Chapter subheadings in Times Roman 12 pt, left-justified bold, with a space between the subheading and the text.

Do not insert page numbers in your manuscript, or other headers or footers.

Format for indicating image placement within the text: <insert image FOTO1.JPG>
Caption in Italics underneath.

Style: The History Center Press suggests following the Chicago Manual of Style, but it is not firmly committed to a particular style. Clarity is the objective. There are a few preferences:

Dates in international format (e.g. 22 July 2013).
Spell out numbers less than 1000.
Use "more than" or "less than/fewer than" for numbers, rather than "over" or "under" ("More than one hundred days...")
Use SI units, or English units accompanied by their SI equivalents.
Do not use text boxes.
Charts and tables must be submitted as JPG files, 300 dots per inch (dpi) or higher resolution. A chart is defined as anything more than two columns of numbers or words.

CHECKLIST

1) Book manuscript (as a single Word file), including

Table of contents
Preface, Introduction, and/or Foreword
Acknowledgements
Photo credit page
Appendices

2) Images (in a separate folder)

Front Cover image: jpg or tiff, resolution 300 dpi or higher.
Interior image files jpg or tiff, resolution 300 dpi or higher.
Author photograph for back cover: 1.5 inches (4 cm) by 1.5 inches (4 cm), jpg or tiff, resolution 300 dpi or higher.

3) A brief (one or two sentence) Author bio for possible use on back cover. It should highlight your expertise or reason for writing the book. Example (The author) worked for many years in the semiconductor industry and is an expert on (. . .) or has written extensively on the subject of (. . .)

4) Copies of Reuse Permissions from the copyright owners of any material you are reusing (such as images, quotations from other publications, etc.). It is the responsibility of the author(s) to obtain all reuse permissions prior to submitting the manuscript.

5) Book Proposal and Reason to Publish, including

A two- or three-paragraph description of target audience.
Expected number of sales.
List of similar books in the field, and a two or three paragraph explanation of why your manuscript is different, and the ways it meets an unfilled need.
Your other publications.
