Biography

Alexander Deussen made significant contributions to the field of geology. In 1924, he directed the first seismograph survey of the US Gulf Plain, and he later built one of the earliest laboratories devoted to the research and study of Gulf Coast sediments. After teaching at the University of Texas at Austin, Deussen worked for the United States Geological Survey and then Guffey Petroleum Company, which would later become Gulf Oil. In 1916, he resigned from Guffey to begin a long career as a consulting geologist. Deussen, the second president of AAPG, died in 1959.
