NACA test pilot Stanley Butchart “flies” the iron cross out-of-atmosphere reaction control simulator. The iron cross had the same weight, dimensions, and moments of inertia as the X-1B research airplane on which the system was installed. Its freedom of movement was provided by a salvaged truck universal joint. Reaction thrust was provided by small hydrogen peroxide rockets mounted at the ‘tail” and “wing tip.” Iron cross project engineer Wendell Stilwell is at left. NACA photo
