Oliver G. Selfridge was born in London, England, on 10 May 1926. From 1942 to 1950, he attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, receiving the S.B. degree, in 1945.

Selfridge worked for two years at the Signal Corps Laboratories, Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. In 1952, he joined M.I.T. Lincoln Laboratory in Lexington, Massachusetts, where he was a member of Division V, Information Processing, in 1962. In the late 1950s, he researched pattern recognition and other areas in artificial intelligence.
