The email thread below concerns initial comments to this article. The one thing JR failed to mention is that he personally leaned on Bill a couple of times/day until Bill finally relented and admitted a first down line could potentially offer at least some marginal revenue to hold us over. The other point I didn't recall was that JR had proposed a red line. By the time we were showing it to Jed in the truck, I know some of us had been completely sold on yellow - and Jed insisted on scrutinizing every other color in the spectrum before finally agreeing to take a look at yellow. Here are a couple of things I remember a little differently: Bill Squadron should be listed with Stan and Gep as founder, because he really convinced the others to take the leap and got the initial funding. I recall Stan needing a fair bit of convincing. Maybe Stan remembers differently, though. Jed originally wanted the line to be kind of day-go orange to match the pad the chain gang put on the sideline at the first down line. I also recall Michael Gough just declaring yellow was it. Marv

I also recall that Rick and I failed to convince Tim H. that keying would be possible to keep the graphics “under” the athletes in football, so we were delighted that JR was willing to give it a try. And my recollection is that Rick and I first proposed to David Hill a super-telestrator to allow Madden to draw on the grass under the players, and Hilly’s reaction was, “you idiots, just draw the first down line.” I think that is one of the reasons why Hilly was on the first down line patent.
