Diogo Varajao was born in Ponte de Lima, Portugal, in 1988. He received the B.Sc., the M.Sc., and the Ph.D. degrees (Cum Laude) in electrical and computer engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP), Porto, Portugal, in 2010, 2012, and 2018 respectively. He received the ABB Award 2013 for his Master’s thesis about matrix converters and the SEMIKRON Young Engineer Award 2018 for his ACDC CUBE patented technology.
He was a Research Fellow at the Smart Grids and Electric Vehicles Laboratory of INESC TEC, from 2011 to 2017, targeting the development of power electronics converters for integration of renewable energy and electric vehicles into smart grids. During this period, he has collaborated in National and International research projects with a global budget over 17 MEUR. Dr. Varajão has one patent about the use of matrix converters to increase the power density and efficiency of bidirectional and isolated battery chargers for electric vehicles and battery energy storage systems.
Between 2017 and 2018, he was the Head of the R&D department at AddVolt, Porto, Portugal, creating innovative solutions to reduce diesel consumption in refrigerated trucks by employing state-of-the-art battery technologies.
Since 2018, he has been working as Strategic System Engineer for Gate Driver ICs & Digital Isolators at Infineon Technologies, Munich, Germany, developing trusted-advisor level relationship with selected key customers and collaborate with the Engineering, Sales, and Marketing teams to define a 3-5 year Product Roadmap of Gate Driver ICs & Digital Isolators.
Dr. Varajao is IEEE Member and is also with IEEE Industrial Electronics, Power Electronics, and Vehicular Technology societies. He has published more than 10 research papers in journals and international conference proceedings.
