Since its inception, IEEE has had a standing [[IEEE History Committee History|History Committee]] advising the [[IEEE Board of Directors|IEEE Board of Directors]] on matters of the legacy and heritage of IEEE and its members and their related professions and technologies, and carrying out some activities in those areas. In 1979, the IEEE Board of Directors endorsed the concept of a professionally staffed history center to support the work of the IEEE History Committee and allocated funds, and in 1980, [[IEEE History Center|the Center for the History of Electrical Engineering was established in the New York offices of the IEEE]]. For most of the first decade, the Center staff consisted of a director, an archivist or curator, and a part-time research assistant. The first director was [[Oral-History:Robert Friedel|Dr. Robert Friedel]], and [[Oral-History:Ron Kline|Dr. Ronald Kline]] succeeded him in 1984.
