This pilot’s navigation board, officially called the Mark 3A Plotting Board, was standard equipment for carrier pilots. Pilots carried the boards with them to jot down pre-flight briefing information. It was about fifteen inches square and was stored below the instrument panel. In use, the pilot slid it out to make a handy desk for navigation plotting and referencing mission information. He could also flip the top up to store maps and other documents. Many fighter directors in the early days of radar used these boards as their radar plotting table.
