I support this nomination because my understanding is that this was a major and unexpected discovery - previously it was not expected that high temperature superconductivity was possible. It has led to many more recent discoveries (which, of course, are too recent to be eligible for a Milestone). These more recent discoveries involve new materials and new understandings of the kinds of superconductivity that are possible. The developments are still mostly in the domain of physicists and probably seem simply bizarre or miraculous to most practising engineers - but it seems likely that many real applications will follow in future, making the 1986 discovery of Bednorz and Muller even more important. The book by Iman Askerzade (Springer, 2012) "Unconventional Superconductors" provides a list of 453 references on Superconductivity, most of them about work which has followed the 1986 discovery. Some information from this book and some of the references might be added to the Nomination to provide more background information.
