IEEE Milestone in Electrical Engineering and Computing

High-Temperature Superconductivity 1986

Here, on 27th January 1986, J. Georg Bednorz and K. Alex Müller discovered that in metal oxides superconductivity can arise at unexpectedly high temperatures of 35 K and more.

Superconductivity is the vanishing of electrical resistance. High-temperature superconductivity enables many technical applications, such as high-performance wind turbines, power transformers, magnetic energy storage, as well as new scientific instruments (quantum interference devices, Large Hadron Collider).
