With suggestions from Eiichi Ohno and Robert Colburn, I hereby propose modified version:

Hitachi developed practical field emission electron source technology, in collaboration with Albert Crewe (University of Chicago), and commercialized the world’s first field emission scanning
electron microscope in 1972. This technology enabled stable and reliable ultrahigh resolution imaging with easy operation. Field emission electron microscopes have made invaluable contributions
to progress of science, technology and industry in fields of physics, biology, material and semiconductor devices

The first sentence is exactly same as Magoun's offer.In the second sentence, a phrase 'with easy operation' is added, which we regard important as performance for 'practical' FE electron microscopes.In the last sentence, 'science, technology and industry' is added, which intends to indicate a wider notion including specific fields of physics, biology and so on.
