This article, published February 2007 issue of Mining Engineering magazine, chronicles the 50-year history of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) from its incorporation in 1957 through 2007. SME traces its origins to its parent society, the American Institute of Mining Engineers (AIME), founded in 1871, and was originally named the Society of Mining Engineers. In the 1950s, the burgeoning AIME became three constituent societies, including SME. The 50-year history of SME examines the economic, cultural, and political factors that have influenced the mining industry and shaped SME into the organization it is today.
