I joined the Navy in 1958. After completing boot camp in San Diego CA, I received orders to NAS Moffett Field in Mountain View CA, awaiting further orders to Radarman Class "A" school at Treasure Island CA. Upon completing RD A school, in early 1960, I received orders as an instructor for the Naval Tactical Data System (NTDS) at the Naval Electronics Laboratory (NEL) in San Diego CA. NEL had a laboratory with NTDS computers and consoles (developmental versions). Myself and other sailors supported NTDS software development, until FAAWTC, located across the street from NEL received the "service test" versions of the NTDS hardware. I continues to work on various other computer oriented systems, Mobile Op Con Center, etc. In July 1963 I received orders to the USS Mahan (DLG-11), which had "service test" versions of the NTDS hardware (SYA-1 consoles, etc). We made the first deployment with NTDS along with the USS Oriskany (CV-34) and the USS King (DLG-10). I remained stationed on the Mahan until December 1969, when I returned to civilian life. I went to work at the Fleet Computer Programming Center Pacific (FCPCP) in February 1971. I retired from there in January 1995.
