On 30 December 1918, Edwin H. Armstrong applied for a patent on the superheterodyne receiver (issued on 8 June 1920). Its ability to boost weak signals made it possible to reduce the size of antennas dramatically. RCA marketed the superheterodyne beginning in March 1924, making it standard.
