A nice proposal and a good milestone. A couple of suggestions regarding the citation: The title seems pretty long. Would too much be lost if you used "Vapor-phase Axial Deposition Method for Production of Optical Fiber, 1977"? Note that I have also just used the 1977 date. I infer that the process was developed over the period of years noted but it seems that the invention was in 1977. Finally, I suggest that NTT be spelled out the first time NTT is used in the citation.

I agree with the assessment above. It is a fine proposal.

Thank you very much for your comments and suggestions. Regarding the suggestion of the citation on June 30th that the title is too long, we propose to change the citation as shown below.

“Vapor-phase Axial Deposition Method for Mass Production of Optical Fiber, 1977-1983.”

We used “Mass Production” instead of just writing “Production” because we believe that the VAD method has paved the way to the mass production of optical fiber, which is important for providing optical fiber at low cost. In terms of the range of years, we would like to use the period 1977-1983. It is true that the VAD was invented in 1977, however we would like to emphasis the importance that the collaborative work after the invention from 1977 to 1983 to improve the process undertaken by NTT and the three electric wire and cable manufacturers Furukawa Electric, Sumitomo Electric, and Fujikura established the basis for the low-cost mass production of high-quality low-loss optical fiber.

About the suggestion that NTT be spelled out, we followed the suggestion and modified the citation accordingly. The following are the title and the citation we modified.

Title: Vapor-phase Axial Deposition Method for Mass Production of Optical Fiber, 1977-1983.

Citation: In 1977, Dr. Tatsuo Izawa of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT) invented the vapor-phase axial deposition (VAD) method suitable for the mass production of optical fiber. The fabrication process was investigated collaboratively by NTT, Furukawa Electric, Sumitomo Electric, and Fujikura and the technology was successfully shifted from research and development to commercialization. The VAD method has contributed greatly to the construction of optical-fiber networks. (65 words)

I support this milestone.

I support this milestone, but would like to suggest slight grammatical change -- switching out of passive voice:

In 1977, Dr. Tatsuo Izawa of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT) invented the vapor-phase axial deposition (VAD) method suitable for the mass production of optical fiber. NTT, Furukawa Electric, Sumitomo Electric, and Fujikura collaboratively investigated the fabrication process. The technology successfully shifted from research and development to commercialization.
