Grumman F6F Hellcat ready to take off from the new Yorktown. The Hellcat was designed specifically to counter the Japanese Zero and eventually achieved a nineteen-to-one kill ratio. Its best advantage was speed. Rate of climb was fairly evenly matched, and the Zero had a slightly tighter turning circle. Hellcat pilots were taught to use their speed advantage by making slashing high speed attacks against the Zero and then dive away, rather than trying to turn with the Zero.
