The motions of an airplane can be described by its rotations and linear translations with respect to its three axis of motion that are set at right angles to each other as shown in this diagram. The plane can be said to have six degrees of freedom of motion: three in rotation about the axes and three in translation along the axes. The angle of attack, α, is the difference of the longitudinal, or X axis, above or below the relative wind (air stream), and yaw angle, β, is the turning to the left or right of the longitudinal axis with respect to the relative wind.
